NHPC Commissions the 120 MW Sewa-II Project

NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydro power company and a ‘Mini Ratna’ Category-I Enterprise of the Government of India has commissioned all the three units of the 120 MW (40 MW x 3) Sewa-II Hydroelectric Project in Jammu and Kashmir. All the three units of the Project have been put on commercial operation. Shri S.K. Garg, CMD, NHPC said “with the commissioning of the 120 MW Sewa-II Project in Jammu & Kashmir, the installed capacity of NHPC has gone up to 5295 MW”. Shri Garg said that Sewa-II is the third project commissioned by NHPC in the current plan period in addition to the 510 MW Teesta-V Project in Sikkim and 520 MW Omkareshwar Project of NHDC Ltd (a joint venture of NHPC and Govt. of Madhya Pradesh) in Madhya Pradesh.

Situated between the villages of Gatti and Mashka in Basoli tehsil of Kathua district of J&K, the Sewa-II Project is a run-of-the river scheme constructed on the Sewa river, a tributary of  Ravi. The project has been executed while facing several challenges including many geological problems and also high water discharge in some areas of Head Race Tunnel.

The major components of the Sewa – II project are a 53 metre (m) high concrete gravity dam, a 3.3 m diameter and 10.084 km long horse shoe shaped head race tunnel, a 9 m diameter and 111 m high restricted orifice type surge shaft, a 2.4 m internal diameter circular steel lined pressure shaft, a surface power house with three units of Vertical Pelton turbines of 40 MW each and three tail race outlet channels of 28m, 39m and 50m length each.

The project will generate 534 Million Units energy annually in a 90% dependable year. The beneficiary states of the project include Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan and Union Territory of Chandigarh. The project is a fine example of attaining a massive engineering feat made possible through sheer hard work and dedication of NHPC employees and the active support and cooperation of the people and Government of J&K.

NHPC is highly active in the state of J&K where it has already successfully commissioned the 690 MW Salal, 480 MW Uri-I and 390 MW Dul Hasti Power Stations. Four other projects of NHPC including the 330 MW Kishanganga, 240 MW Uri-II, 45 MW Nimoo-Bazgo and 44 MW Chutak Projects are under active construction. NHPC is also in the process of forming a Joint Venture with JKSPDC and PTC for executing Pakal Dul (1000 MW) and two other hydroelectric projects with aggregate installed capacity of about 2100 MW in Chenab River Basin in J& K.
